International Scholar Laureate Program

Immerse yourself in your field of study. Meet those of like mind and similar interests from around the country. Travel to a faraway continent. At the same time.

The International Scholar Laureate Program is a unique program in which students travel to the globe’s far reaches to learn about their field of interest from experts, compare it to their understanding of that discipline in the U.S., learn about the indigenous culture, and maybe come back with a souvenir or two. All in about two very enriching weeks during the summer.

NSCS Staff: Spotlight on Arianna Cohen

This week’s NSCS Staff Member is Arianna Cohen. Arianna is of of our Managers of Member Experience. She works closely with chapter officers to provide them with a connection to the national office, and give them support as they work to make their chapters successful! Here’s a little more about Arianna:

What’s your favorite color?

It would have to be blue. Any shade works really.

What’s the coolest place you’ve ever been?

Queenstown, New Zealand. While studying abroad in Australia I went with some friends to New Zealand on the way back. It is the adventure sports capitol. Adventure sports=the coolest.

Where do you like to go to think and reflect?

Whole Foods. Ah the possibilities!

What’s your favorite food?

Ok another tough one. If we are talking breakfast then it’s cereal. If we are talking breakfast locations it’s Cereality. Lunch or dinner I am a fan of the sushi/parfait combo from Whole Foods.

What’s your favorite movie?

Tie. Wet Hot American Summer and Empire Records. Love Actually was a close second.

What’s your all-time favorite TV show?

I love Best Week Ever, The Office, and Gossip Girls. There I said it. I absolutely love Gossip Girls.

What’s your favorite sound?

The sound of the ocean.

What’s the best book you’ve ever read?

The Shadow of the Wind.

Where would you most like to go that you’ve never been?

I have a really really long list of places that I am interested in going. As a longtime tomato fan I just really want to go to the Tomato Festival in Spain. It’s a huge deal where everyone goes to this one city center and throws tomatoes at each other. Everyone is a winner.

Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts?

Dunkin’ Donuts. They are the Starbucks of my hometown in New Jersey. The hot chocolate there is just the best. Kinda over the whole Baskin Robbins tag along thing. Dunkin’ Donuts is better than that.

NSCS Staff: Spotlight on Senta Sample

The NSCS Staff Member of the week for this week is Senta Sample! Senta is the Manager of Strategic Partnerships, and she helps to form new relationships with different corporate, graduate school, and non-profit organizations across the country. She works very hard to make sure that NSCS members have a great network and can get the most benefits possible out of their membership. Senta lives in Orlando, Florida, and attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (in my home town)!

Without a doubt…PURPLE all the way!

What’s the coolest place you’ve ever been?

Anchorage, Alaska

Where do you like to go to think and reflect?

1003B Celebration Ave (my apartment is truly my private getaway)

What’s your favorite food?

I absolutely love cereal! All types, you can eat it any time of day. Great midnight snack.

What’s your all-time favorite TV show?

Right now I am loving King of Queens, but I would have to say Martin

What’s your most prized possession?

My photo albums. Taking pictures is truly the only way to freeze a moment in time!

What game show would you like to be on?

The Price is right! I’m all about making money and bringing family/friends along for the ride.

Who would you most like to meet?

Oprah of course! She has such a beautiful spirit. Also one of my personal dreams is to be a talk show host!

What’s your favorite sound?

I like hearing the dishwasher and the washer/dryer running because I know something is getting done (laundry), I also like to hear dogs breathe (weird, I know).

Where would you most like to go that you’ve never been?

I would love to do a marathon in Italy

For those of you who have been to an NSCS Convention before, you know what a great opportunity they can be. You have the opportunity to meet new people, network with graduate schools, interview with potential employers, listen to inspiring speakers, and much, much more. This year, the Convention will be even BETTER than in years past, and will be held in Orlando, Florida at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort (pictured above)! The NSCS Convention 2008 will be taking place July 17-19, 2008 at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort at Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Over 1000 NSCS members from all over the U.S. will be meeting together, in one location, for three days of inspiring speakers; real-world, hands-on learning opportunities; and unparalleled access to the people and resources you need to move ahead.

NSCS Staff: Spotlight on Amy Shopkorn

This week’s staff member of choice is Amy Shopkorn, the NSCS Senior Director of Operations. Amy works hard as a member of our Executive Team to manage many of the behind- the- scenes things that go on here in our office- from human resources to our website. Here’s a little more about Amy:

What’s the coolest place you’ve ever been?

It’s a toss up between Cinque Terre on the western coast of Italy and Bloomberg’s office in City Hall.

Where do you like to go to think and reflect?

I go running or biking on my own.

What’s your favorite food?

Sushi, though Lauren hates it so I’m lucky if I get to eat it even once a month.

What’s your all-time favorite TV show?

Cheers – it was a sad day when it finally ended.

What’s your most prized possession?

A box of old letters, pictures and stuff saved from my entire life. It lives under the bed.

What’s your all-time favorite song?

It’s a tie – Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp and The Hold-Out by Jackson Browne

What game show would you like to be on?

– Jeopardy or Nickolodeon GUTS. The Agro Crag looks like fun.

What’s your favorite sound?

The piano.

What’s the best book you’ve ever read?

Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying. It is written in multiple voices with each character telling part of the story.

Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts?

Do you even have to ask? America Runs on Dunkin.

Hiking or shopping?

LOL – would you believe me if I said both? All depends on my mood though shopping for hiking clothes might trump all.

NSCS Benefit of the Week!

The NSCS member benefit of the week is… our Scholar of the Day Program! Get the recognition that you deserve for your unique characteristics and hard work by submitting your story to be featured on the NSCS website! Here’s how to do it:

Scholars are featured on the NSCS Web site for their outstanding achievements in the classroom, on campus and in their communities. To get featured, e-mail the following to someshwar@nscs.org, with “NSCS Scholar of the Day” as the subject line of your e-mail.

A short bio (100-200 words): include your full name, university’s name and year of graduation. The bio should include awards you’ve received, extracurricular activities you’ve participated in, community service efforts, and anything else you’d like other members to know about you.
An appropriate photograph: This is something your grandparents could see– so please choose wisely!

We are excited to read your bios and hear more about our great and diverse members!

This week, my pic for the Staff Spotlight is Mishri Someshwar, the NSCS Coordinator for Outreach and Communications. Mishri works on many different projects, including writing and sending out press releases to our chapters across the country, and helping to put together invitations in the spring. Here’s a little more about Mishri:

What’s your favorite color?

I have two—black and white. They’re classic, elegant and soothing—what’s not to love?

What’s your favorite food?

I like bold, strong flavors. So I like everything from paella to southern Indian fish curries, Thai food to Italian.

What’s your favorite movie?

In terms of pure repeat-watching, Bridget Jones’ Diary or Addicted to Love.

What’s your all-time favorite TV show?

Coupling. It’s a British sitcom about three couples. I can watch it over and over; the writing never ceases to amaze me.

Who would you most like to meet?

The Dalai Lama. I think he’s the closest thing to divinity on earth.

Other than Washington, D.C., where else would you like to live?

I’d love to live in London or Sydney. I was raised in India, so both the UK and Australia have a strong influence on us.

What’s the best book you’ve ever read?

Fiction—Vanity Fair. It’s got everything I love—the historic angle, socio-cultural issues, a brilliant plot and superb writing.

Non-fiction—The Long Walk to Freedom, which is Nelson Mandela’s autobiography. I’ve always admired Mandela, and the book just added to that.

If you could attend any event in history, what would it be?

Tough one! Either the Gettysburg address or Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a dream” speech.

If you were the leader of the free world, what’s the first thing you’d do?

Outlaw “enhanced interrogation” and restore Habeas Corpus in its entirety.

Krispy Kreme. I’ve had bad experiences with Dunkin’ Donuts’ donuts.

This week I have chosen to feature Cynthia Uguru for my NSCS Staff Spotlight. Cynthia is the Coordinator for Member Experience- Programs. Among her many responsibilities at the National Society of Collegiate Scholars are handling all scholarship applications and decision making and planning the NSCS annual Convention (which will be held in Disney World this July). She is a busy (and very hardworking) lady! Here’s a little more to help you get to know Cynthia.

What’s the neatest place you’ve ever been?

I can name all the dirtiest places I have ever been

Where do you like to go to think and reflect?

My Bed

What’s your favorite food?

Egusi soup and Garri

Who would you most like to meet?

Charlie Rose, (From the Charlie Rose Show) I would love to sit and listen to him talk about all the people he has interviewed

What’s your favorite sound?

Early in the morning hearing birds whistling

What’s the best book you’ve ever read?

Sidney Sheldon- Master of the game (nothing compares in terms of grabbing you and never letting go. The heroine was this conniving, despicable, do anything get to the top “you know what”. But she kicked serious ass. Just talking about it makes me want to read the book all over again)

If you could attend any event in history, what would it be?

That is a hard one; I really have to think about that.

If you were the leader of the free world, what’s the first thing you’d do?

Kill very single Corrupt politician in the developing world (better yet I will behead them to send a message to others)

Where would you most like to go that you’ve never been?

Sao Tome Principe (an island off Africa, I hear it’s where heaven and earth collide. There are so many songs describing its beauty)

Do you have a hero? If so, who is s/he?

My mom even though I don’t tell her that enough
